Benzyl alcohol as a preservative
Benzyl alcohol is a widely used preservative in sterile water diluents, valued for a fairly narrow job: keeping bacterial growth in check inside a sealed container that will be opened and accessed more than once. It is added at a low, measured concentration, commonly around 0.9% weight per volume in laboratory-grade bacteriostatic water, rather than in the pure form used in other industrial or cosmetic applications.
The mechanism is straightforward. Benzyl alcohol interferes with the cellular processes bacteria rely on to grow and divide. At the concentration used in a diluent, it does not sterilize the solution outright or claim to eliminate every organism present. Its role is to slow growth enough that a vial accessed repeatedly, over days or weeks, does not become a growth medium for whatever might be introduced at the point of each draw.
Bacteriostatic versus bactericidal
It helps to separate two terms that sound similar but describe different things. A bactericidal agent kills bacteria outright. A bacteriostatic agent, which is what benzyl alcohol is functioning as here, inhibits growth and reproduction without necessarily killing the organisms present. In a laboratory diluent, bacteriostatic action is the more relevant property: the goal is a stable, usable solution across the life of a sealed vial, not a one-time sterilizing treatment.
This is also why bacteriostatic water is treated differently from single-use sterile water once a vial is opened. The preservative buys a working window for repeated access, but it does not make aseptic technique optional.
